Rice Alert

Rice University has developed Rice Alert to effectively communicate emergency information through multiple channels.

Rice Alert uses the following channels:

  • Text messaging to mobile phones via Rice Alert, as designated by you in IMAGINEONE (for faculty and staff), or as designated by you in ESTHER (for students)
  • Emails via Rice Alert, as designated by you IMAGINEONE (for faculty and staff), or as designated by you in ESTHER (for students)
  • Rice University website updates found at EMERGENCY.RICE.EDU
  • Everbridge app for IOS and ANDROID
  • Outdoor warning system (sirens)

All faculty, staff, and students should log in and sign up for Rice Alerts following the information provided above.

Rice Alerts uses the Everbridge platform. Everbridge has a mobile APP that supports the receipt of Rice Alert as well as additional safety applications. To learn more about the APP, download the information listed below:

Rice University Police Department

Rice University Police Department takes the lead in providing a safe environment for the university community. Their website serves as a guide for emergency assistance, safety information, training classes, parking enforcement, and other services. It also provides access to a daily crime log, as well as online forms to report crimes and register valuables.


Rice EMS

Rice University Emergency Medical Services (REMS) is a First Responder Organization comprised of undergraduate volunteers who are certified EMTs and AEMTs. We are dedicated to promoting campus safety by providing high-quality emergency medical care and community education.

REMS also provides coverage for large special events, teaches American Heart Association CPR and First Aid courses, and offers EMT-Basic and Advanced EMT courses to undergraduates for both academic credit and national certification.

We are available to respond to emergency calls on and around the Rice campus 24/7 throughout the year and can be reached at the same number as RUPD: (713)-348-6000.


Prevention

The women and men of the Rice University Police Department (RUPD) strive to provide education on crime prevention's best practices through continued education for the students, faculty, and staff, all the while, developing a partnership with the Rice Community.

RUPD provides the community with tools, training programs, and safety information that can be instrumental in ensuring a safer community. Specific focus and attention are paid to trending concerns within the community, related to prevention.

Personal Safety

  • Walk or jog in groups of three or more
  • Avoid isolated or dark areas
  • Travel with confidence and purpose
  • Do not wear earphones while walking or jogging
  • Know the locations of emergency phones
  • Do not use ATMs at night
  • Stay alert, and plan ahead for "What if...?"

Residential/Workplace Safety

  • Know your neighbors or coworkers; you are the best one to determine if something doesn't feel right
  • Do not prop open exterior doors
  • If you come in through an electronic key card access door, do not allow strangers to enter with you
  • Always lock your door when you leave
  • Lock your door while you sleep or when you work late
  • Get involved, if you believe you are witnessing suspicious behavior or an incident criminal in nature, call RUPD immediately

Tips for Protecting Your Property

  • Register your bicycle with the RUPD
  • Properly secure your bike to the bike rack it is at. (See video below)
  • Mark and record your belongings with RUPD
  • Keep your car locked - Store items of value in the trunk
  • Coats, backpacks, and purses should remain with you or be locked up
